How to crate train a puppy

The crate is one of the most important tools you have. It provides safety, structure and a calm, secure place for your dog. Here are the core rules from Robert's Complete Field Manual.

The first night

Your puppy sleeps in the crate. No exceptions. Expect whining, which is normal. Do not give in. If you do, you teach the dog that noise gets them out.

If you stay consistent, it does not take long for a puppy to settle down, adapt and start to enjoy the crate. The crate becomes their den.

Crate safety rules

  1. 01Do not put stuffed animals or anything they can chew apart and swallow in the crate
  2. 02No loose items if you cannot supervise
  3. 03If you are not watching, keep the crate simple and safe

The morning routine

  1. 01Stay calm and quiet
  2. 02Open the crate
  3. 03Pick your puppy up immediately
  4. 04Go straight outside
  5. 05No distractions, no stopping

The umbilical cord method

One of the most effective ways to prevent bad habits early is to attach a 10 to 12 foot long line to your puppy and keep them connected to you inside. You remove freedom before the dog earns it, which prevents accidents, chewing and wandering off.

You are always in position to interrupt mistakes, redirect immediately and reinforce correct behavior.

Questions

Common questions about this method.

Yes. Robert's rule is no exceptions, because giving in to whining teaches your puppy that noise gets them out.
