How to teach a dog a reliable recall

Recall may be the most important command your dog ever learns. Something will happen at a dog park, in a parking lot or in your own yard, and you will need your dog to come back immediately. A reliable recall gets built rep by rep. It does not happen by accident.

The foundation rules

If you break these, nothing else in the system works.

  1. 01Say the command once. Every repeat teaches your dog the first one was optional.
  2. 02Never call your dog if you cannot enforce it. Do not issue a command you cannot back up.
  3. 03Always follow through, no exceptions, not even once.

The core drill: Turn and Commit

Start close, controlled and clean, before you add distance or distractions.

  1. 01Put your dog on a long line in a sit and wait, and step three feet directly behind them.
  2. 02Say the recall word once, calm and clear.
  3. 03The moment your dog begins to turn toward you, praise. That turn is the moment you are marking.
  4. 04Your dog comes all the way in and sits in front of you, then gets a big reward.

Five drills that lock it in

Short sessions, ten to fifteen solid reps, always ending on a win.

Real-world proofing

If your dog fails at a level, you moved too fast. Step back and rebuild.

  1. 01Level 1: a quiet backyard or room, with no distractions
  2. 02Level 2: mild distractions in a familiar area, still on the long line
  3. 03Level 3: other dogs nearby or an unfamiliar location, long line still on
  4. 04Level 4: parks, sidewalks and high-activity places, where you prove it is real

Mistakes that destroy recall

  1. 01Repeating the command over and over
  2. 02Calling your dog when you cannot enforce it
  3. 03Only calling your dog to end fun or for something they do not want
  4. 04Going off leash too early
