How to stop a dog pulling on the leash

The walk is where leadership gets built. It is not a bathroom break with a leash attached. Here is the method Robert uses to turn a pulling dog into one that walks beside you.

Make pulling stop working

A dog pulls because it works. Every time pulling gets the dog where it wants to go, the habit gets stronger. The fix is not anger or a fight over the leash. It is a clean, calm change of direction every single time the dog pulls.

You lead, the dog stays with you, and there is no pulling. That is the whole goal of the walk.

The method

Four steps, every walk.

  1. 01Do not move until your dog is calm. Outwait the dog and reward calm behavior. If you walk out the door while your dog is amped up and pulling, the walk is already lost.
  2. 02If your dog pulls, turn around immediately and walk the other way. No anger, just a U-turn, every time.
  3. 03Guide your dog back into heel position beside you, and praise the moment they are there.
  4. 04Think of the leash as power steering. Use it to guide your dog where you want them, not to haul them.

Mistakes that keep the pulling going

  1. 01Letting the dog choose the pace and direction
  2. 02Repeating corrections instead of following through with a U-turn
  3. 03Walking a dog that has not settled before you leave the house
  4. 04Letting pulling work, even once, because you were in a hurry
  5. 05Going too far, too fast, before the foundation is solid

Starting a puppy on the leash

Most people get this wrong right away: they clip the leash on and let the puppy pull. Robert starts it this way instead:

Questions

Common questions about this method.

Usually because pulling still works some of the time. Robert's rule is that allowing pulling to work, even once, because you were in a hurry, keeps the habit alive. Consistency every walk matters more than any single technique.
